TYPES OF BRAAI - & FIRE WOOD

SEKELBOS

Sekelbos (Dichrostachys Cinerea) is a small bushlike tree, found in Northwest Province, Limpopo, Mpumalanga and KwaZulu-Natal. Its an invasive tree.
Sekelbos can be used both for heating up your home and for braai or pizza ovens. Burning Sekelbos has a distinct Bella-Bella bushveld smell. Sekelbos can also be used in both open and closed combustion fireplaces

KAMEELDORING

Vachellia erioloba, the camel thorn, giraffe thorn, or Kameeldoring in Afrikaans, is a tree of Southern Africa. Its preferred habitat is the deep dry sandy soils in the Kalahari. The tree can grow up to 20 metres high. It is slow-growing, very hardy to drought and fairly frost-resistant. The wood is dark reddish-brown in colour and extremely dense and strong. The name ‘camel thorn’ refers to the fact that giraffe commonly feed on the leaves with their specially adapted tongue and lips that can avoid the thorns.
Kameeldoring is an excellent braai wood, with long lasting coals for that extended family braai.

BLACK WATTLE

Acacis mearnsii is a spreading shrub or erect tree that typically grows to a height of 10m and has smooth bark, sometimes corrugated at the base of old specimens. Black Wattle is an invasive tree brough from Australia to South Africa. In South Africa this species is considered a weed. This is because they threaten native habitats by competing with indigenous vegetation, replacing grass communities, reducing native biodiversity and increasing water loss from riparian zones.
Black wattle is a quick braai wood as the wood is not that dense and the coals do not last that long. Black Wattle is an excellent fire wood and ideal for internal and external combustion fireplaces.

BLOEKOM

There are about seven hundred Bluegum (Eucalyptus) species. At present, they are distributed throughout much of the world and, due to their rapid growth, they are often used in forest plantations for the paper, timber or chemical products, in addition to their ornamental value.
The seeds of Eucalyptus trees have medicinal properties. The trees can reach more than 60 m in height.
Bluegum is used in pizza ovens and fire places.

What does the name Savuti mean?

The Savuti area is located in Southern Africa. The Savuti area borders the Delta to the west and Chobe National Park to the east and is one of Africa’s best known big game areas. Savuti is one of Botswana’s wildlife hotspots. The Savuti Region is known in particular for its exceptional predator sightings. Famously large prides of lion and packs of hyena hunt on the open grasslands and leopard patrol the woodlands. Savuti is a place of enchantment, of beauty, and boasts one of the greatest concentrations of animals in Southern Africa. Savuti means ‘mystery’.

During December thousands of zebras migrate from the Linyanti in the north and move south through Savuti to the grasslands of the Mababe Depression. In February they start heading northwards again. September and October can be extremely hot but game viewing is very rewarding as predators are concentrated around the waterholes.

NATIONAL BRAAI DAY

The National Braai Day initiative aims to position National Heritage Day as South Africa’s annual day of celebration. We call on all South Africans to unite around fires, share our heritage and wave our flag on 24 September every year. National Heritage Day is a public holiday in South Africa. Our government set this day aside for all South Africans to celebrate our rich heritage. Across race, language, region and religion, we all share one common heritage. It is called many things: Chisa Nyama, Braai and Ukosa to name few. Although the ingredients may differ, the one thing that never changes is that when we have something to celebrate we light fires, and prepare great feasts.
